“Termidor” (project / a new orchestra piece)
Ricardo Llorca has recently been commissioned by the National Orchestra of Spain to write a new orchestral work (“Thermidor”) to be premiered on October 17th, 18th and 19th  2014 at the National Auditorium in Madrid.

“Thermidor” ( a work in progress/ notas de Ricardo Llorca)

ìThe Fall of Robespierre.î Portrays an event of 9 Thermidore An II (27 July 1794) when Robespierre was taken under arrest and prevented from pleading his case before the Convention. The guards of the Convention arrive and one shoots and wounds Robespierre to the cry of ìDeath to the tyrant!î Meanwhile Robespierreís supports denounce the art as illegal. Robespierre and 21 of his followers (Couthon, Saint-Just, et al.) were guillotined the next day in the very same place that Louis XVI had been executed 18 months before. The fall of Robespierre brought an end to the Terror and led to the formation of a new regime called the Directory. An alternative version of the event says that Robespierre wounded himself in an attempted suicide, not out of cowardice but in keeping with Greek and Roman way of honorable death.

IGOR STRAVINSKY
(Instructor: Ricardo Llorca)
IGOR STRAVINSKY
Igor Stravinsky, the celebrated master of modernity, is perhaps the most powerful figure in the 20th century music. His sense of rhythm and exotic tonalities makes his music some of the most exciting experiences a listener can encounter. Like his contemporary Pablo Picasso, he had a cataclysmic effect on Western culture which spanned over three generations.

To understand Stravinsky’s work is to understand the 20th century music in all its different stages: the Nationalism, the Polytonalism, the Avant-gardes, the Dodecaphonics, the Neoclassicism, etc. His earlier works exhibit the influences of Wagner, Debussy and Rimsky-Korsakov; and as he progressed, he added Eastern and heavily stylized Russian elements to his music, along with rhythms that he alone understood and scored. As he entered into the later stages of his life, he adopted an almost neo-classic stance, informed by influences as diverse as Baroque counterpointal techniques and American Jazz.

In this Course we will try to comprehend and to analyze, through Stravinsky’s unequaled brilliance and originality, every lasting aspect of the 20th century music. We will travel from Russia in the late 1800’ to the avant-garde Paris of the early 1900’ to Hollywood in the 1960’, discovering the events and influences that shaped Stravinsky’s life and work. We will see why Stravinsky ranks as one of the best composers for the stage, with his Ballets “The Firebird  ”, “Petrouchka  ”, and “The Rite of Spring  ”.  We will also see his operas “The Rake’s Progress  ” and  “Oedipus Rex  ”, as well as some of his chamber writing, and a masterpiece of choral composition “The Symphony of Psalms ”.
2015 The Juilliard School (Spring Semester 2015)
RICHARD STRAUSS
(Instructor: Ricardo Llorca)

Richard Strauss, the last Romantic composer, is one of the giant and most controversial figures in contemporary music. His artistic education was conservative and his aesthetics were classical, yet his music shocked the world with his iconoclastic symphonic works that inspired avid debate, as well as his operas that literally incited crowds to riot.
RICHARD STRAUSSAlready in 1905, with “Salome”, Strauss found operatic immortality as the composer of the most scandalously sensational stage production of his era. The powerful “Elektra” (1909) and the glory of “ Der Rosenkavalier” (1911) brought fortunes to both Strauss and his librettist, the Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal. Symphonic poems, beautiful songs and choruses, chamber music and two symphonies complete the list of his work.
With audio and visual material, and concentrating on specific examples, this course will analyze and listen to some of Richard Strauss’s  symphonic works, like “Don Juan”,“Till Eulenspeigel” or “Also sprach Zarathustra”. We will also examine the musical and dramatic aspects of “Salome”, “Elektra” and “The Rosenkavalier”, and will analyze in depth at what is considered one of the masterpieces of the twentieth Century, Richard Strauss’s  threnody for strings “Metamorphosen” (1945).
The class will also discuss his life and will focus on his roots, aesthetics, and his relationship with the exciting world of Vienna in the early 1900’s.

SARAO for Erin Ginn and Matt Van is set to a fiery piano score by frequent collaborator, composer Ricardo Llorca. Just as the music deconstructs a Scarlatti Sonata, so does the choreography play with the conventions of a classical pas de deux and puts wit in the phrasing. SARAO is a Spanish word for party. Not every relationship continues after the ball is over.

The pas de deux CAVES to a guitar work by the same composer pays tribute to the long-time collaboration of the two Juilliard graduates and faculty members Rübsam and Llorca. The unconventional use of point work as a means of story telling is demonstrated by company member Temple Kemezis who is partnered by Lloyd Knight.

2013 - 2014 Class "Diaghilev and Les Ballet Russes"
THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL Class 2013-14

Class "Diaghilev and Les Ballet Russes" Serge Diaghilev, an impresario who encouraged collaboration in the arts, is one of the most influential artistic figures of the twentieth century. He gathered the geniuses of his time and was the patron of the most daring and innovative group in the history of the arts: the Ballet Russes. Its first season in Paris in 1909 was a triumph. Audiences were stunned by the music, the quality of the dancing, the spectacular sets, and the exotic atmosphere of the ballets. Diaghilev’s earlier productions exhibited the influences of Tchaikovsky, Debussy, and Rimsky-Korsakov.

As he progressed, he added Eastern and stylized Russian elements to his ballets, along with rhythms and music that he alone understood and commissioned. Class "Diaghilev and Les Ballet Russes"As he entered into the later stages, his productions adopted an almost neoclassic stance, informed by influences as diverse as Baroque contrapuntal techniques, French music, and American Jazz. The company Diaghilev assembled comprised some of the ballet’s greatest dancers and choreographers – Fokine, Pavlova, Karsavina, Nijinsky, Massine, and Balanchine – who were given scores by great composers such as Richard Strauss, Maurice Ravel, Eric Satie, Manuel de Falla, Darius Milhaud, and Francis Poulenc. Igor Stravinsky’s work graced every season of the Ballet Russes, from its sensational debut in 1909 through to the final 1929 season just prior to Diaghilev’s death. Along the way, they created masterpieces of both music and choreography in “The Firebird,” “Petrushka,” “Le Sacre du Printemps,” “L’Histoire du Soldat,” “Pulcinella,” “Les Noces,” and “Apollon Musagete.” Costumes and scenery were designed by painters like Matisse, Leo Bakst, Alexander Benois, Pablo Picasso, Di Chirico and Robert Delaunay. With this startling concentration of talent, it is hardly surprising that the Ballet Russes made such a lasting impact.

“Curso de Interpretacion de la Musica Contemporanea”
Prof: Ricardo Llorca

“LAS HORAS VACIAS” (“The Empty Hours”)
AN OPERA BY COMPOSER RICARDO LLORCA WILL BE PERFORMED
AT THE SAINT PETERSBURG PHILHARMONIC HALL
ON OCTOBER 3RD 2012

Ricardo Llorca, one of the most promising talents to emerge from the new generation of contemporary composers, has already been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize 2010 for this opera. “Las Horas Vacias” - an opera for soprano, chorus, piano and chamber orchestra- is a work about a lonely woman, addicted to the internet, who lives in her own fantasy world. “Las Horas Vacias” is an attempt to explore a psychological process, so common in our contemporary world: the loneliness and the increasing feeling of emptiness of the developed Western societies. “Las Horas Vacías” was premiered to critical acclaim in 2007 during the “XII Setmana de Musica Sacra de Benidorm”. It has been later performed at the “United Nations Auditorium” (New York City 2009); “Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts” (New York City 2010) and on October 3rd at the SAINT PETERSBURG PHILHARMONIC HALL as a part of the “Festival Tardes de España” organized by Maestro Alexis Soriano and the “Opera Incognita de San Petersburgo”.

“Spanish Evenings” Festival was created by conductor Alexis Soriano in 1998 with the mision of presenting mostly Spanish (although also Hispanic-American) Music or interpreters. The programing criteria is based on quality, plurality, young soloists and composers, investigation and restorement of “lost” or unkwown Spanish repertoire and independence. The Festival takes place in historic halls in Saint Petersburg, such as Philharmonia big and chamber halls, Kapella, Hermitage Theater, Dom kompozitorov, Conservatory main hall, among others. It has presented around 15 orchestra world prèmieres of authors like, Jesús Rueda, Jesús Torres, Ramón Lazkano, Joseba Torre, Pilar Jurado, Miguel Franco, Eduardo Rincón, Sergio Blardony, José Evangelista, Jordi Cervelló, Amando Blanquer, Manuel Castillo and many other instrumental pieces by Consuelo Díez, Teresa Catalán, Carlos Cruz de Castro, Jordi Cervelló, Agustín Castilla Ávila, etc

“John Adams: an American Master”

“John Adams: an American Master”

John Adams is one of America's most admired and frequently performed composers. Audiences have responded enthusiastically to his music and he enjoys a success not seen by any American composer since George Gerswhin or Leonard Bernstein. John Adams was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1947. During his youth he was strongly influenced by the intellectual and cultural institutions of New England. He received both his BA and MA degrees from Harvard University, where he was active as a conductor, clarinetist, and composer. His principal teachers included Leon Kirchner, David Del Tredici, and Roger Sessions. After graduating from Harvard University in 1971, he moved to California, where he taught and conducted at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music for ten years. His innovative concerts led to his appointment as the orchestra's composer-in-residence between 1979 and 1985, the period in which his reputation became established with the success of such works as “Harmonium” and “Harmonielehre”. Later Adams would compose “On the Transmigation of Souls”, a work written in commemoration of the first anniversary of the World Trade Center attacks.

Adams was closely allied with the style known as “Minimalism” which utilizes repetitive melodic patterns and consonant harmonies. Unlike some other minimalist music, John Adams’ works are marked by frequent allusions to a wide range of 20th-century idioms, both popular and classical. John Adams shocked a lot of people when he put contemporary figures such as Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger and Mao Zedong on the operatic stage in “Nixon in China” (1985-87). Adams saw these characters almost as mythical figures, not unlike the gods and legendary heroes that populated so much classical opera.

The director Peter Sellars, librettist Alice Goodman and the choreographer Mark Morris were his collaborators in this project and in his next opera, “The Death of Klinghoffer” (1991), based on the 1985 hijacking of a cruise-liner. Adams’s most recent operatic works are “Doctor Atomic” (2005) and “A Flowering Tree” (2006).

This class is intended for musicians as well as those with no musical background.

by Ricardo Llorca

“Choreographer Henning Rübsam presented his company SENSEDANCE on the opening night of its 20th anniversary season in front of a full house at the Manhattan Movement & Arts Center on Manhattan's West Side.

"NONET," one of three premieres, is a fun neo-classical ballet for the nine-member ensemble. The bright colors of the costumes enhance the upbeat mood of the dancing. Elegant Maria Phegan starts out with three women mirroring her movements in canon. Patterns form and dissolve into momentary mayhem only to build new configurations, which in turn bring the fine music by one of the company's resident composers, Ricardo Llorca, to a rich and satisfying life”.

Spring Semester, 2012. The Future of Classical Music
The Juilliard School/ Spring Semester 2012.

Course outline:
“The development of creative musical thought in the last decades has been rich and complex, full of achievements and with seemingly endless contradictions. Change has continued to overtake music and the arts and new forces have been set in motion. The Internet moving at full speed and the rise of digital media have changed dramatically the world of today’s music. Columna Música announces the CD release of Ricardo Llorca’s opera “Las Horas Vacias/The Empty Hours”Younger generations of composers have created their own network by effortlessly transmitting their music through Youtube videos and MP3’s and by participating in blogs, forums and chat rooms. Their diaries have become storytellers of today’s music and have created their own group of friends and followers in places such as MySpace, Twitter or Facebook. What might one say abo ut the changing cultural role of composers in our time ?; What is the future of music ?; Who are today's most outstanding living composers ?; Which are the different styles that best represent the music of today ?; What is the real influence of contemporary music in today's society ?. These are questions that we will analyze and discuss in this class. To understand the works and the different styles of today's living composers, and their role in modern society, is certainly a controversial and an exciting subject.
We will bring specially for this class some composers of the last generation who will help us understand their music. We will also focus on the different styles that have shaped the music of today. With live performances, using audio and visual material, and concentrating on specific examples, this course will analyze and listen to some of the historical trends that have shaped the music of today's composers.
This class is intended for musicians as well as those with no musical background.

2010/11 THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL
Academic Year 2010/11 ( New York City )

“Music of Spain and Latin America”
Instructor: Ricardo Llorca
A course beggining January 2011

THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL Academic Year 2010/11 ( New York City )The contributions of Spanish, Latin American and Caribbean composers to music literature have been substantial and certainly deserve to be better known. Music has always occupied a central position in the Hispanic cultures, from the popular types to concert pieces and from chamber styles to contemporary music. For more than 1,000 years, music in Spain has combined the traditions of Jewish, Islamic, Gypsy, and Western music to produce one of the most exciting and colorful of national sounds. Those traditions were later brought to the New World where they were mixed with autochthonous music in South America, and African sounds in Brazil and the Caribbean. “La Purpura de la Rosa”, the first opera to be performed in the New World, was presented in Lima in 1701. It had a colorful Spanish continuo-accompaniment of harp, guitars, and percussion, with choruses sung to the lively rhythms of South American dances. We can see the descendants of these 17th-century traditions in today’s itinerant South American folk musicians and in Spanish student bands. Lately, composers such as Alberto Ginastera or Ernesto Lecuona would reflect in their compositions a music born of different traditions: jazz, ballroom music, Spanish folk, and the Afro-Cuban trend. Over the years the performances and the music of Astor Piazzola, Daniel Baremboim, Alicia de la Rocha, Andres Segovia, and Pablo Casals have brought Spanish and Southamerican music forward. This course will trace the roots of Spanish and South American music and examine the splendors of the Middle Ages, Pre-Columbian, Renaissance, and Baroque periods, and will follow Spanish and South American compositions through the triumphs of the 20th century. The course will feature live performances of instrument works as well as videos and recordings not available in the United States.

THE JUILLIARD SCHOOL Academic Year 2010/11 ( New York City )COMPOSERS OF TODAY: THE NEW GENERATION

Every age produces aesthetics and individuals destined to shape the cultural history of their times. Change has continued to overtake music and the arts and new forces have been set in motion. What might one say about the changing cultural role of composers in our time ?.  The development of creative musical thought in the last decades has been rich and complex, full of achievements and with seemingly endless contradictions. To understand the works and the different styles of today's living composers, and their role in modern society, is certainly a controversial and an exciting subject. Many questions will arise when we approach the subject. Questions that we will analyze and discuss in this class: who are today's most outstanding living composers?; what is really modern music?; which are the different styles that best represent the music of today ?; what is the real influence of contemporary music in today's society ?; why have younger generations of composers rejected and ignored the last 40 years of experimentalism by returning to tonal music ?; are women well represented in the world of contemporary music?. Spectra Ensemble

Monday 28 September, 6 p.m.
Teatro Piccolo Arsenale

For over fifteen years, the Spectra Ensemble – founded in 1993 – has sought to create a relationship of dialogue and exchange between new musical production from Belgium and the international arena. In response to this idea and a permanent nucleus of eight instrumentalists of the highest quality, the Spectra Ensemble regularly commissions new work, contributing to the formation of a contemporary repertoire in a country that, especially thanks to Lucien Goethals and Karel Goeyvaerts, has contributed to the evolution of music today. There are more than 70 works by mainly Belgian authors commissioned and performed by the Spectra Ensemble, including those of Pierre Bartholomée, Joachim Brackx, Boudewijn Buckinx, Frits Celis, Claude Coppens, Raoul Desmet, Alvaro Guimaraes, Filip Rathé, Hans Roels, André Laporte, Geert Logghe, Frank Nuyts, Lucien Posman, Jan Rispens, Lucien Goethals, Violeta Dinescu (Germany), Niki Kemp (Britain) and Gilberto Mendes (Brazil).

The concert by the Belgian ensemble combines music by Paolo Furlani, Stefano Gervasoni and Luc Brewaeys, musicians belonging to the same generation but of very different training, ending with Octandre, another cornerstone of the aesthetics of Varèse, after Integrales, Hyperprism and Arcane in an ideal tribute to the composer who appears throughout the Festival.

The great creative partnerships of the 20th century are explored in this course with an emphasis on the basic processes, idiosyncrasies, and opportunities involved in this unique working relationship. In addition to learning about the history behind groundbreaking syntheses of dance and music, students attend performances by contemporary collaborative artists, some of whom provide additional insight as guest speakers in the class. Students evaluate and review works, question existing barriers, discuss the factors that impact the outcome of collaborations, and examine the ways both worlds have influenced and continue to change the shape of contemporary artistic production.

New Music For New York and Brahms Zigeunerlieder

The MCE celebrates its fifth season of its innovative commissioning program, New Music for New York, with three new works written for the MCE performed in historic Earl Hall of Columbia University.

The composers of the new works are Shawn Crouch, Ricardo Llorca, and Martha Sullivan.

New Music for New York

The MCE has now commissioned over 20 new works for chorus from local New York-based composers, providing audiences with fresh and fascinating listening experiences and opportunities to meet the composers bringing these new choral sounds to life.

The programming for these concerts has long been the unusual combination of new works with traditional choral favorites, but this year the juxtaposition will be taken to a new level - the complete opus 103 of Brahms, the Gypsy love songs called Zigeunerlieder, will be interwoven with the three new works, creating an unusual opportunity to listen to newly composed music directly beside ea rlier masterworks. The composers have been invited to respond to this novel context for their works however they'd like, and the audience is invited to reflect on the pollination of ideas from one era and style to another.

The concert will close with three favorites of long-standing with the MCE - Precious Lord, My Shepherd Will Supply My Need, and Danny Boy.
